Today starts the new year and I’m not sure how it happens but it would seem that once you have children the years pass like telephone poles on a country road.  The next thing you know your children have grown up, they’ve gotten married and you now have Grandchildren.

Who said life was fair?

Another year has passed, you wake up on the first day of the new year and wonder how this year can be different and while you know time won’t pass any slower, what can we do to make this year better.

Listen, Learn and Laugh!

In 2014 I hope we all Listen more.  We have so many forms of communication these days but it seems the art of listening is somehow getting lost with all the interruptions we now have.  It’s something I have noticed over the last several years, groups of people sitting together and everyone communicating with someone other than the people they are actually with.  I find myself guilty of this, while I was with my family on Christmas, I found myself responding to and wishing others a Merry Christmas on my smart phone.  Not very smart when you think about it.

Today I will look for the fastest way to put my iPhone on silent and enjoy the voices of those I love.

In 2014 I hope we all Learn more.  Learning is the key to a healthy mind, I have always enjoyed learning new things and read books on nearly a continuous basis.  This year I want to learn something new and challenging and while I haven’t decided what that will be I can tell you watching my 5 year old Granddaughter learn this past year has made me feel like a slacker.  How about learning to read, write, add, subtract, identify the states in the US, read music and play piano with two hands.  I’m thinking that if we all spent more time learning we might even improve our listening skills.

In 2014 I hope we all Laugh more!  I truly believe that laughter is the best medicine.  Who doesn’t feel good when they are laughing.  I think we laugh a lot less than we used to.  There are just so many forms of nasty in our lives it’s nearly impossible to just get away let alone find something to laugh about.  The 24 news, talk radio, the internet, Facebook, Twitter, politics, religion, elections, the list goes on and on.  Add all these together and all of the sudden we can’t laugh at each other, let alone ourselves.  In 2014 it’s time to laugh at just how serious we have become.  Laugh so hard we loose our breath and for so long we have forgotten what we were laughing about in the first place and are now just laughing at each other.  In 2014 I plan on laughing a lot!
